Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton's powerhouse offense doesn't need any introduction. Predictably, the trio of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman has had its fingerprints all over this series, and I'm not sure there is really anything Los Angeles can do to slow those three down.

This group is generating high-danger scoring chances at a high clip, ranking first among the 16 playoff teams this postseason in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60). The Oilers are dominating offensively both at even strength and on special teams, ranking second among the field in power-play percentage at a ridiculous 50% clip.

While Edmonton boasts a 2-1 advantage in the series, things have not gone as well defensively. At 5-on-5, it ranks in the bottom half among playoff teams in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60).

Backing up this team is goaltender Stuart Skinner, who has allowed four or more goals in three of his past four starts. Skinner possesses a fade-worthy .865 SV% and 4.17 GAA over that stretch.

Los Angeles Kings

While Los Angeles' offense is obviously not that of Edmonton's, it can hold its own. The Kings are averaging 3.33 goals scored per game and rank second-to-last among the 16 playoff teams in xGF/60.

Although the offense has typically held its own in this series, the blue line cannot say the same. Surrendering high danger scoring chances at a high clip, Los Angeles rank last among the field in xGA/60.

Unsurprisingly, goaltender Cam Talbot has struggled to deal with the product in front of him, which is a trend that stems from the end of the regular season. Talbot has now allowed three or more goals in nine of his past 11 starts, posting a fade-worthy .879 SV% and 3.60 GAA over that stretch.

The total in Game 1 closed at 5.5 before 11 total goals were scored. The Game 2 total closed at 6, and there were nine total goals scored in that game as well.

If you can see where I'm going with this, the total closed at 6.5 in Game 3 and was surpassed as well. Both offenses are playing well while both goaltenders are struggling to deal with the creation of these high-danger scoring chances, and I wouldn't be shocked to see the over cash once again in Game 4.

As I said in my Game 3 preview, this matchup reminds me a lot of the 2022 NHL Playoffs series between Edmonton and Calgary, a series in which eight or more goals were scored in four of the five games.
